Kareena Kapoor Khan, a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, is set to lead the cast of Netflix’s Indian adaptation of the bestselling novel “The Devotion of Suspect X” by Japanese author Higashino Keigo. The movie will be directed by Sujoy Ghosh, best known for his work on the critically acclaimed film “Kahaani.” In addition to Kapoor Khan, the cast will include Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma, both of whom have established themselves as accomplished actors.
Ghosh had originally set up the project at Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms several years ago, but it was eventually shelved. The film was initially supposed to star Saif Ali Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Fawad Khan, and was directed by Ghosh. However, the project was considered too similar to the hit film “Drishyam,” which resulted in it being put on hold. The movie was then restarted with a new cast and crew, and Kapoor Khan was brought on board for the lead role.
“The Devotion of Suspect X” tells the story of a single mother and her daughter who commit a crime and are aided by a neighbor in covering it up during a police investigation. The novel has been adapted into films in various countries, including Japan as “Suspect X” in 2008, Korea as “Perfect Number” in 2012, and China as “The Devotion of Suspect X.” A Hollywood version of the story is also currently in development.
The Indian adaptation of the novel is produced by 12th Street Entertainment, Northern Lights Films in association with Boundscript and Kross Pictures. The producers include Jay Shewakramani, Akshai Puri, Ghosh, and Thomas Kim. The movie marks Kapoor Khan’s debut in the streaming space.
