Rohit Shetty is one of the leading filmmakers in Bollywood who makes movies of mainly two genres i.e. comedy as well as action-drama. He is also a cinematographer and started his career as an assistant director when he was 17 years of age. His notable works include movies like; The Golmaal series, Singham, Chennai Express and Singham returns. His film Chennai Express is presently the fourth highest grossing Bollywood movie worldwide. He was also nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Director for the same.

Shetty’s parents were also a part of the Bollywood industry. His mother Ratna Shetty was a junior artist in Bollywood and his father M. B. Shetty was a fight master who took part in many Hindi and Kannada films. Shetty has four sisters and two brothers.

Shetty’s first film as an assistant director was with the director Kuku Kohli in the film Phool Aur Kaante starring Ajay Devgan and Madhoo. His upcoming assistance projects included Ek Aur Kohinoor, Suhaag , Haqeeqat and Zulmi. He later worked with Anees Bazmee for the Ajay Devgan-Kajol starring superhit Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha. Hindustan Ki Kasam and Raju Chacha were his two other major projects. He made his own film independently in the year 2003. The movie Zameen with the actor Ajay Devgan didn’t do well at the boxoffice.

Shetty got success only after his 2006 comedy film Golmaal: Fun Unlimited. The film starred Shetty’s favorite Ajay Devgn, Sharman Joshi and Arshad Warsi as well as Tusshar Kapoor. Since the beginning Shetty has done most of the films with Ajay Devgan. In the year 2008 he made Golmaal’s sequel, titled Golmaal Returns with the same cast except Joshi who was substituted by Shreyas Talpade. The movie turned out to be one of the highest grossers of the year.

In 2009, Rohit Shetty scored with a sleeper hit, ‘All the Best’ which is his most under-rated hit of his career. In 2010, he came up with Golmaal 3, the multi-cast superhit, which turned out to be the second biggest hit of the year. Ajay Devgan owes two of his biggest hits to Rohit Shetty in the form of Singham (2001) and its sequel Singham Returns (2014). In 2012, Rohit Shetty rocked the box office with yet another hit ‘Bol Bachchan’.

Rohit Shetty’s biggest blockbuster to date is Chennai Express (2013) which is also SRK’s highest grosser to date. The movie went on to become the fourth highest grossing movie in India till date (2015), In 2015, he brought the famous pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol together in ‘Dilwale’ which did fabulously well at the box office.

 

Shetty also made one of the highest grossing movies of Bolywood in 2013. The film Chennai Express, had superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, The film made a profit of total US$17.4 million and also set box office records. It also had the biggest opening week and weekend. Rohit Shetty has also played one of the judges for one of the popular Indian television show Comedy Circus. As a host, he was also a part of the television stunt game show called Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi in 2014 replacing Akshay Kumar. He became a producer with the film Singham Returns, which he co-produced with Ajay Devgan under his banner Rohit Shetty Productions.

Needless to say, one of the most popular director of Bollywood asks for a pricey sum and gets it too. His feet is Rs. 15 crore per movie, he was paid the highest ever fee paid to a Bollywood director, for the remake of the Tamil movie ‘Soodhu Kavvum’. Rohit Shetty has a net worth of Rs. 100 crore.
