Veronica has upped the ante for horror films by its spellbinding chills and thrills. In fact, this Spanish movie directed by Paco Plaza is touted as ‘the scariest horror film’ ever. Though the movie was initially released in Spain on August 25, 2017, the movie embranced international popularity and even cult appeal when it was released on Netflix on February 26, 2018.
Plot of Veronica
The story is about a teenage girl who finds herself caught in the vortex of a supernatural evil force. She uses an Ouja board during a solar eclipse to call on the spirit of dead friend, who apparently had died in a motorcycle accident. But she and her friend end up accidentally summoning the spirt of Veronica’s dead father, who wreaks havoc in the house.
Is Veronica a true story?
According to information put forth by the police authorities in Spain, Veronica happens to be inspired by a real story. The case is famous known as a the Vallecas Case, referring to a little town in Madrid, where a young girl called Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro allegedly used the Ouja board to summon a classmate who had died in a motorbike accident. But a nun came along and broke the ouja board. Later Estefania complained of strange voices and hallucinations. The doctors were clueless about her case, and she died in August 1991 in in the Gregorio Maranon Hospital; two months after the ouja board incident.
The Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro family didn’t involve the police for a year, till Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro passed away. Estefania’s parents also claimed to have seen shadows looming in their room and doors slamming.
When the police investigated the case, they were alarmed to hear loud noise coming from an empty porch and other rooms, a perfect functioning door opening and closing on its own accord in a weird manner, brown stains of goop and a crucified Jesus being separated from the cross. The sightings were considered rare and mysterious by the police. Three police officrs and Jose Pedro Negi, the Chief Inspector of National Police, went on to explain the happenings in detail to what became famous or infamous as the ‘Vallecas Case’.
The horror story of ‘Veronica’ becomes chilling particularly because of the back story involving Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro , which is testified by an official police stamp. Some people who would like to lean on the side of logic have stated that Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro died because she had probably inhaled some vapor that emanated from the broken pieces of Ouijja planchette glass.
