How did the Kiki Challenge Begin?

The Kiki Challenge is a social media challenge that involves people dancing to the tune of a song called ‘In My Feelings’ by singer/rapper/hip hop artist Drake. The song is from his latest music album called ‘Scorpion.’

The Kiki Challenge was conceptualized by social media celebrity and comedian Shiggy. He posted a video of himself in a track suit doing the specific ‘dance’ to his nearly 2 million Instagram followers. The song ‘In My Feelings’ has the lyrics “Kiki, do you love me?” from where the word ‘Kiki’ is taken as name of the challenge. The challenge is also known as #DoTheShiggy, or #InMyFeelingsChallenge, or #ShiggyChallenge.

The video posted by Shiggy did not involve a moving vehicle. NFL wide receiver for New York Giants Odell Beckham Jr. subsequently shared a video of him jumping out a moving car and doing the Kiki dance. This is when the fad of jumping out of cars and doing the dance started.

The challenge became viral and people all over the world began making Kiki Challenge videos. Will Smith climbed atop a bridge in Budapest and did the Kiki Dance on the roof. Since there was a plethora of videos uploaded onto social media in a real short space of time, it resulted in people trying to do more and more shocking, scarier, faster, and better takes of the Kiki challenge to grab the eyeballs across the world. This led to chaos on roads, hospitalization, and grievous injuries. It can also endanger the lives of others.

Police Warnings

The Kiki Challenge has resulted in many people falling out their vehicles, running into streetlight lampposts, etc. There was one video of a man in Florida getting hit by a car when doing the Kiki dance.

The police all over the world have taken steps and issued advisories about how doing the Kiki Challenge could land them in legal trouble or in the hospital.

In the US, the NTSB/National Transportation Safety Board sent out tweets that distraction when driving can be dangerous and even fatal. The police in different in India have posted witty tweets and put up billboards with dark humor to dissuade people from jumping out of moving cars and dancing. Officials in Abu Dhabi, UAE have issued arrest warrants against 3 well known social media celebrities. Doing the Kiki Challenge in Dubai, UAE is punishable with a fine, jail, or both. The police in Spain have also issued warnings that they will arrest those who are found dancing on the streets.

The video of the song ‘In My Feelings’ was released by Drake on July 10, 2018. It has a cameo appearance by Shiggy. Towards the end, the video features different people from all over the world doing the Kiki Dance.
