Who is Delonte West?

Delonte West is a former American professional basketball player who was born on July 26, 1983, in Washington, D.C. He was known for his tenacious defense and versatility on the court, as well as his off-court struggles with mental health issues and legal troubles.

West attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, where he excelled as a basketball player. He then played college basketball at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where he became a star player and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team in his freshman year.

After two successful seasons at Saint Joseph’s, West decided to forego his final two years of college eligibility and enter the NBA draft in 2004. He was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 24th overall pick in the first round.

During his rookie season with the Celtics, West played in 39 games and averaged 4.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. He quickly gained a reputation as a tenacious defender and a hard worker, earning the nickname “The People’s Champ” from Celtics fans.

West played for the Celtics for three seasons before being traded to the Seattle SuperSonics in 2007. He then played for the Cleveland Cavaliers for two seasons, where he became a key member of the team and helped lead them to the NBA Finals in 2009.

Throughout his career, West struggled with mental health issues, including bipolar disorder and depression. He also had a number of off-court incidents that brought negative attention to his career. In 2009, he was arrested for carrying multiple weapons while driving his three-wheeled motorcycle. In 2010, he was suspended by the NBA for ten games for pleading guilty to weapons charges.

West continued to play professional basketball for several more seasons, including a stint in the NBA Development League, but he never regained the success he had earlier in his career. He played his final professional game in 2015.

In the years following his retirement from basketball, West has continued to struggle with mental health issues and has faced further legal troubles. In 2020, a video of him being beaten on the street went viral, bringing renewed attention to his struggles and leading to calls for greater support for retired professional athletes.

On January 19, 2021, it was reported that Delonte West had secured employment at the same rehabilitation facility where he received treatment and had reunited with his mother. However, in July 2022, new videos surfaced showing West begging for assistance once again, this time in Virginia. On October 15, 2022, West was arrested in Fairfax County, Virginia, for attempting to enter a vehicle that did not belong to him, resulting in his booking on four misdemeanor charges.

Despite his difficulties, West remains a beloved figure among many basketball fans for his tenacity on the court and his willingness to speak candidly about his struggles off the court.
