It is unusual for a Shah Rukh Khan movie to flop this badly. So when the SRK-starrer ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ failed to meet expectations of both fans and critics, one began wondering whether the superstar has lost his charm? Well, I don’t think so.
SRK who changed the tide of Bollywood movies with films like ‘Baazigar’, ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, ‘Chak De India’ has also given duds like ‘Guddu’ and ‘Oh Darling Yeh India’. But all said and done, even his flops at that time (in the 90s) had something unique, but sadly ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ brought nothing new to the table.
To put into perspective, this is not about Shah Rukh Khan but more about the film that left people disappointed. I firmly believe it is the script and the director that takes a movie places. Check out my review on ‘Baahubali’ where I have shown how a good script and superlative treatment made the movie, such a blockbuster.
Coming to Jab Harry Met Sejal, here are some of the reasons, why the movie turned turtle at the box office.
- Boring story – It was a hackneyed plot of a girl asking her tour guide to accompany her around Europe to find her lost engagement ring. There is no adventure, no zing, nothing that make you sit up and say ‘wow’. The characters keep on going on and on , all for the damn ring ….and the second half turns out to be even more exasperating.
- Boring characterizations – Anushka Sharma who plays ‘Sejal’ seems confused and indecisive. Instead of empathizing for her, one feels annoyed at her. At the end of the day, you really don’t care if she gets the ring or not. And you’d be surprised to know that the ring was in her bag, all this while. Oh God, save me!
- Bad editing and worse climax – The movie seems so long-drawn in parts. The part about SRK’s run in with immigrant Indians was not needed or could have been trimmed. The climax as well as the penultimate moments are quite predictable.
- Bad promotional strategy – Instead of one or two solid trailers, they released so many ‘mini trailers’. Too many cooks spoil the broth!
So, what does SRK have to do? He is still the undisputed king of romance, he’s a wonderful guy, very witty, very humble, a great movie star. But I believe, he should change his approach and bring in something new. It is not just the case of Shah Rukh Khan, even Salman Khan tasted a surprise flop with Tube-light. As I said, neither SRK is the king, not Salman is the king.. Content is King…something that Aamir Khan got right with Dangal and Akshay Kumar got right with Toilet Ek Prem Katha.
