All eyes are on Aamir Khan’s release ‘Dangal’ that is due to release on December 23, 2016. It is a biopic-sports movie based on India’s world champion female wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, who were trained by their father Mahavir Singh Phogat.
While Aamir Khan plays Mahavir, the role of Geeta is played by Fatima Sana Shaikh, while Sanya Malhotra will reprise Babita.
Mahavir Singh Phogat – A wrestler in his own right, he faced near ostracization from his humble Balali Village (Bhawani District) in Haryana, when he began training his daughters to become female wrestlers. Not only did the villagers frown upon the fact that the girls would not be married, but he also had to face enough criticism of not being a responsible father. But Mahavir held on to a steadfast belief that if an Indian woman can become a prime minister, she could become a wrestler too.
Geeta Phogat – Born on December 15, 1988, she has several firsts to her credit. She is the first female wrestler to win India’s first-ever gold medal in women’s wrestling. She won the 55 Kg freestyle competition at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She is also the first-ever Indian female wrestler to qualify for Olympics. She was also the recipient of Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in 2009. Though she qualified for the 2012 London Olympics, she lost out on the medals. She has also won three back to back medals in Asian Cadet Championships in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Babita Kumari – The younger sister of Geeta Phogat (born November 20, 1989), she won a silver medal in the freestyle 51 kg category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She also won a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships in 2012. She also won a gold meal in the Commonwealth Games (2014) in Glasgow.
