Manushi Chhillar is an Indian student and beauty queen. She was crowned as Miss World 2017 on November 18, 2017. She is thus the sixth Indian to win the Miss World crown. The last winner of the title was actor Priyanka Chopra who was crowned Miss World in 2000.
Early Life and Education
Manushi was born on 14th May 1997 into a family of doctors. Dr. Mitra Basu Chhillar, her father works as a scientist at the DRDO or Defence Research and Development Organisation. Her mother Dr. Neelam Chhillar is the department head of neurochemistry and an associate professor at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences.
Manushi did her schooling at St. Thomas’ School located in New Delhi. The 5 ft 9 in tall beauty then joined the Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College for Women located at Sonipat for a medical degree. She is in the third year of her medical studies and has taken leave to pursue her beauty pageant activities.
- Chhillar wants to become a cardiac surgeon. She also wants to open non-profit clinics and hospitals in villages and rural areas.
- She is a trained classical singer. She even went to the National School of Drama.
- Manushi has learnt Kuchipudi dance and got training under masters Kaushalya Reddy and Raja and Radha Reddy.
- Chhillar loves outdoor adventure and sports. She is very passionate about snorkeling, scuba diving, and bungee jumping.

Her caste is Jat. Chhillar is a ‘gotra’ or clan of the Jat caste. Though she belongs to Haryana, many people from this clan are also found in Rajasthan.
How Manushi Chhillar won Miss World 2017
Manushi participated in the Femina Miss India competition on June 25, 2017 and was a representative of Haryana state. She won the competition and thus earned the right to be the Indian representative at the 2017 Miss World Pageant held in the city of Sanya in China. At the Femina Miss India pageant, Manushi also won the Miss Photogenic title.
Before being crowned as Miss World 2017 at the beauty pageant, Chhillar reached the semi-final spots in competitions like People’s Choice, Top Model, etc. She was also declared as co-winner of the Beauty with a Purpose contest, wherein her project was named ‘Project Shakti.’ The goal of ‘project shakti’ campaign was to create and increase awareness about menstrual cleanliness and hygiene. Manushi travelled to around 20 rural areas during the course of this project and offered treatment to more than 5000 women.
In the round of the final five, during the Question and Answer round, Manushi was asked which profession according to her deserved the highest salary and why. Chhillar replied that she was very close to her mother and that motherhood did not deserve reimbursement in the form of just a salary or cash, but in the form of love and respect. In her opinion, mothers deserved the highest salary.
Chhillar was crowned as Miss World 2017 by outgoing Miss World 2016 Stephanie Del Valle of Puerto Rico. There have been six other Indian women who have won the Miss World title in the past. They are Reita Faria in 1966; Aishwariya Rai in 1994; Diana Haydon 1997; Yukta Mookhey in 1999; and Priyanka Chopra in the year 2000. It’s been 17 years since an Indian last won the pageant!
