Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, known to his followers as Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singhji Insan is a guru based in India who is the head of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, an Indian social group. Singh has been serving as the group head since he was conferred into the position by Shah Satnam Singh, his predecessor on 23 September 1990. A controversial figure in India, Singh is accused of mocking the sentiments of Sikhs, Hindus and Adivasis. In 2015, Singh featured on the 96th out of 100 most powerful Indians list by The Indian Express.
Apart from his duties as the head of DSS, Singh is also an actor, singer, music producer, lyricist and filmmaker. He made his acting debut in 2015 with the film ‘MSG: The Messenger’ and also served as the writer, director and producer of the movie. Most of his films and music albums revolve around his religious teachings but are usually subjected o negative criticism. Singh received as many as 30 film credits in various film departments for his work in the 2016 MSG sequel MSG: The Warrior Lion Heart.
Ram Rahim singh was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment, when he was found guilty by the court for ra*ing two women, back in 2002. In a streak of violence following the conviction, 38 people lost their lives and 200 people were injured in violent protests.
Early Life and Education
Singh was born on 15 August 1947 in the Sri Gurusar Modia village in Rajasthan’s Ganganagar district, India, as the only child of his parents, homemaker mother Naseeb Kaur and a landlord father Maghar Singh. Singh was raised to follow Sikhism in a Jat Khatri family. The city of Sirsa in the Indian state of Haryana is his hometown.
Singh studied at school and dropped out after finishing his 9th grade education. Singh’s predecessor Shah Satnam Singh, initiate him into the sect ‘Dera Sacha Sauda’ when he was 7 years old and in September 1990, conferred sainthood upon him while also naming his as his successor, which resulted in the beginning of his career as the head of the sect.

Singh is one of the most followed gurus in India and has more than 70% followers from various Indian castes and sects which include the Dalits and the Other Backward classes. He is known to exhibit massive political influence among his followers and openly asks them to caste their votes for a particular political party. Singh was initially an Indian National Congress supporter and used his influence to lead Congress to victory in the Malwa region during the 2017 Elections in Punjab, but was unable to repeat his influence in 2012. Singh then shifted his alliance to the Bharatiya Janata Party after he was praised by Narendra Modi, the then Prime-ministerial candidate during his election rallies in 2014. Singh’s influence resulted in the BJP’s win in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
Singh is also a social worker and has regularly organised drivers for health issues which have received recognition from the Guinness World Records. Singh holds the world record of undergoing the most “Cardiac Echo Tests”. Singh is an active participant of the nationwide Clean India Campaign, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and organises several sanitation drives. He also contributed to the disaster relief efforts during the Gujarat Earthquake and Odisha Cyclone.

Singh has been married to Harjeet Kaur in a match fixed by his parents when he came to age. All members of the Singh family use Insan (which means Human) as a suffix to their last name. Singh has three biological children with his wife; daughters Charanpreet Kaur and Amanpreet Kaur and son Jasmeet Singh. His son is married to Punjab Congress leader Harminder Singh Jassi’s daughter.
Singh adopted a young girl named Honeypreet Kaur who is now an established Punjabi film actress and director.
Singh has been the face of several controversies in India and in August 2017, was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for allegedly ra*ing and criminally intimidating two women, in a case that had been filed in 2002. Singh’s sentence received violently by his followers who caused mass riots in the state of Haryana. The incident became a huge national news story in India.
