Arijit Singh is an Indian music programmer and playback singer. He gained public attention as the losing finalist of the reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005. He rose to prominence and critical acclaim after singing the song “Tum Hi Ho” in the 2013 movie Aashiqui 2. He won the Filmfare Award Best Male Playback Singer for it.
Arijit was born on April, 25 1987, in Jiaganj town in Murshidabad, West Bengal, India, to a Sikh father and a Bengali mother. Music runs in his family. His mother plays the tabla and sings; maternal aunt was a trained Indian classical musician; and maternal grandmother was a singer. Singh attended the Raja Bijay Singh High School and then graduated from University of Kalyani’s Sripat Singh College.
Due to his interest in music rather than academics, his parents got the professional services of Dhirendra Prasad Hazari who trained him in tabla; Rajendra Prasad Hazari for Indian classical music; and Birendra Prasad Hazari for pop music and Rabindra Sangeet.
After losing in the finals of Fame Gurukul 2005, Arijit won ‘10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil,’ a musical reality show in which the winners of Indian Idol and Fame Gurukul faced off against each other.He then set up his own recording studio and ventured into music programming. He then assisted music directors like Mithoon, Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, Pritam Chakraborty, and Vishal–Shekhar as a music programmer.
He made his Bollywood playback debut with the song ‘Phir Mohabbat’ from the movie Murder 2. After getting commercial and critical popularity with ‘Tum Hi Ho,’ from Ashiqui 2. Singh continued singing and working as a music programmer. He sang and worked in several hit Bollywood movies like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela, Chennai Express, and Heropanti, etc. Arijit became a director with ‘Bhalobasar Rojnamcha’ a 2015 Bengali feature film.
Personal Life and Trivia
- Singh was previously married to a reality show co-contestant. The couple has a daughter. After divorcing his first wife, Arijit married his childhood friend Koel Roy in 2014. The family lives in Andheri, Mumbai.
- As per Forbes, Arijit earned $5.2 million/INR 350 million in 2014.
- In 2015, he got an extortion call from gangster Ravi Pujari. He did not file a complaint, but the Oshiwara police made a note of it in its diary.
- Arijit Singh is publicity shy and does not like to hog much limelight. He says, “I love buying fish from the market and being low profile defintely helps.”

His most popular as well as most awarded song is ‘Tum Hi Ho’ from Aashiqui 2, which won him 9 awards out of 10 nominations. He also won Filmfare Award (2016) for his song ‘Sooraj Dooba’ from Roy.
