Kapil Sharma and Krushna Abhishek are the two most popular comedians on Indian television. Of course, the competition between them is no laughing matter.
The rivalry between Krushna and Kapil go back to the Comedy Circus Day, which would be aired on Sony Entertainment Television. While Krushna along with his partner and friend Sudesh Lehri won most of the first few seasons, Kapil Sharma eventually began to dominate the show and won all seasons from 2010 to 2012.
Later Kapil went on to create history on television with Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors TV. The disruptive show along with Sunil Grover, Kiku Sharda and Ali Asgar made weekend nights, a habitual viewing for people not only in India, but across the world. Later, Kapil reduced the airing of his show from Saturday-Sunday to just Sunday. Raj Naik, the CEO of Colors, went on record to say that Kapil became busy with his movie career and would not be able to give time to the show. So, he (the CEO) started another show called ‘Comedy Nights with Bachao’, a roast-based show featuring Krushna, Sudesh and other artists. The show became popular and according to sources, Kapil started feeling the heat. No one knows who initiated it, but soon Comedy Nights with Kapil was out of air on January 24, 2016. The show was replaced by Comedy Nights Live, starring Krushna Abhishek, Bharti Singh, Sudesh and other artists. While the response to Comedy Nights Live has not been encouraging, the channel insists that the show has met with a fabulous response.
Krushna Abhishek who had many a false starts on other channels, tasted huge popularity with ‘Comedy Nights Bachao’. He got busier when he teamed with Bharti and other artists for ‘Comedy Nights Live’. He is of the opinion that comedians should be known for their real names than just their characters. “For instance,” he says, “Kiku Sharda participated in Jhalak Dikhh La Jaa’ as ‘Palak’ in spite of being such a fine talent himself.” Krushna believes that he is a better entertainer than Kapil because he can dance too. Krushna attacked Kapil Sharma for quitting Colors, the brand that had made him popular. He said, ‘Kapil should have realized that Shah Rukh Khan came to Comedy Nights with Kapil because of Colors and not because of him. He started having issues when big stars came to my show (Comedy Nights Bachao) as well. It would have been better if he had worked on the format and indulged in a healthy competition with me, than just leaving the channel that made him a brand. ” Krushna believes that Comedy Nights with Kapil lost its viewership heavily in the last few weeks.
Kapil Sharma of course, has not responded to criticisms by Raj Naik or Krushna Abhishek. In fact, he along with his team-mates, Sunil Grover, Kiku Sharda and Ali Asgar are all set to jump back into the ‘funny space’ with Comedy Style, that may release on Sony TV in mid-2016. Who do you think excels in comedy – Kapil Sharma or Krushna Abhishek?
