Despacito is leading popularity wave like no one’s business. The single by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi featuring Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee, crossed 1 billion views on YouTube on April 20, 2017 and 3 billion on August 4, 2017. Simply said, to date, it is the most watched YouTube video ever.
Despacito is a Spanglish summer single (the title of which means “Slowly”) that was released on January 13, 2017 and topped the charts of 40 countries. It became the first song primarily in Spanish to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Macarena in 1996. While the song was already famous in the Latin world, Justin Bieber’s remixed version released on April 17, 2017, super-charged the original into English speaking charts across the world.
Other contributing factors for the success are the upbeat tempo and the sexy Spanish accent which never fails to make people groove. Despacito is also a kick-ass track for a road-trip. And did I forget the smoking hot of Miss Universe 2008 Zuleyka Riveria, whose presence in the video elevates it to a whole different level.
Is Despacito over-rated? Well, if you step back into the 90s, you will see and hear much zingier songs that are capable of billion views and more like Macarena, Baci baci tambo, The Ketch-Up Song, Brazil (by Venga Boys), I am a Barbie Girl (by Aqua) and more. But then having said , Despacito is a better song among the clutter that gets released these days. So yeah, enjoy the viral phenomenon.
