Amazon Prime Video has teamed up with major Bollywood production houses for films and TV shows. Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos added that he would be adding $3 billion in India, taking the overall total to $5 billion; with $300 million focused on original content. So expect lots of shows and movies to come up on Amazon Prime Video. But for now, here are my favorite Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime Video
Dil Chahta Hai – This movie just doesn’t get old! This comedy-drama movie is about three guy friends who drift apart following a major transition in their lives. The way they get on with their lives and then come together is a sure-shot slice of life. The 2001 movie stars Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna in lead roles.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara – Easily the best travel-based movie in Bollywood, this inspiring coming-of-age film shows how to confront your fears, both on the outside and inside. One of my personal favorites! This 2011 movie stars Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol in lead roles.
Piku – Another slice of life movie that should never be missed. A simple relatable comedy-drama movie of a short-tempered Piku, her grumpy father and a temperamental driver as they embark on a road-trip from Delhi to Kolkata. For some reason, I find Bollywood doing a good job with movies on road-trips..Huh! Do not miss the amazing performances by Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan – One of Salman Khan’s best films, both quality-wise and collections-wise, it is about a Bajrangi, an ardent devotee of Hindu deity Hanuman, who embarks on a trip to unite a mute six-year-old Pakistani girl Shahida (played wonderfully by Harshaali Malhotra)… separated in India from her parents, back to her hometown in Pakistan.
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron – One of the best satirical comedies and a cult-classic, this 1984 movie is a hilarious take on politics, red-tapism, bureaucracy, media and profit-motive nexus. Do not miss the laughaton of a climax!
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge – The seminal movie that made Shah Rukh Khan, the romantic icon of India, it revolves around Raj and Simran who fall in love during a vacation in Europe. How Raj convinces Simran’s orthodox family that he is the right guy for their girl, forms the second half of the story. There is hardly anyone who hasn’t seen it, but if you haven’t or wish to see it again…go watch it on Amazon Prime Video!
