Why did Katappa kill Bahubali? This was the question in the minds of every movie enthusiast ever since Bahubali 1 (The Beginning) stormed Indian cinema in 2015. The answer is convincingly dished out in the Bahubali 2, the 2017 blockbuster.
To be frank, this second part is more a prequel than a sequel, as the story delves into the origin of Mahendra Bahubali’s father Amarendra , who is ordained to be the king of Mahishmati.
But he chooses his lady love Devasena, over the throne. His vile brother Ballaldev becomes the king and Amarendra is relegated to be the commander-in-chief.
Amarendra, of course, is born to be a king with or without the throne, as is evident when he continues being popular with the commoners, even after being banished from the palace, for protecting the honor of his wife.
Later, we are witness to the sinister manner in which Amarendra is unwillingly killed by Katappa as a part of a master-plan by Bhallaldev.
And finally we see how after listening to the narrative, son Mahendra Baahubali avenges his father’s death by raising his own army , with Katappa by his side.
Plus points about Bahubali 2
Well, it is a visual extravaganza. The CGI and speed ramping (Zack Snyder’s signature technique of speeding up, slowing down, then speeding up the tempo of a particular action sequence) is spell-binding.
The romance between Devasena and Amarendra has a Titanic-like vibe too.
The best part of the film is the script, which is a lot better than the first one. The mythical saga is rich with an original Indian premise, and reflects Indian culture, heritage and values with absolute finesse.
What could be better
I felt the climax was long-drawn and could have trimmed just a bit, especially after the flashback narrative is done with.
Prabhas is terrific in the dual role of father and son. I believe his breakfast included 40 half-boiled egg whites blended and protein powder, the effect shows on the screen!
Rana Daggubati as Bhallaldeva, the villainous cousin and crowned king, has amazing screen presence.
Satyaraj as Katappa, Ramyakrishnan as Rajamatha Sivagami get top honors for their memorable performances.
All hail the master of the ship, director Raja Mouli ! Known as the Indian James Cameron, he has given this project six years of his life, paying meticulous detail to every aspect of the film.
Best scene in Baahubali 2
That would be Bahubali cutting the head of a Senapati for insulting Devasena, in style.
In conclusion, I would say ‘Bahubali 2’ lives excels the hype. Would love if Bollywood dishes more of such stuff!
I would give it a 4.5 out of 5
