Both Aashiqui 2 (2013) and Aashiqui (1990) are different as chalk and cheese in terms of plot but there are bound to be comparisons because both have the same names, have been made from the same banner (Vishesh Films and Bhushan Kumar) and the second one has been promoted as the sequel to the first one. Plus, another common factor is the shot of the lovers’ face hidden in the coat, which was immortalized in the original. So which is a better film – Aashiqui 2 or Aashiqui 1 ?
Aashiqui 2 released on April 26, 2013, starring Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Sharma, is a story of a singer who discovers a musical protégé and falls in love with her, but feels that his alcohol addiction and his vain life is a barrier for his lover’s success. The movie has heart-tugging moments and a decent music score with two songs ‘ Tum Hi Ho’ and ‘Sunn Raha Hain’
Aashiqui released on July 23, 1990 is a benchmark as far as music is concerned. The soundtrack stands 4th in Planet Bollywood’s list of top 100 Greatest Sound Tracks. The story of Aashiqui revolves around Anu (Anu Agarwal) and Rahul (Rahul Roy) who meet each other for the first time in a police station, as they are held for running away and creating ruckus respectively. Love blossoms between the two and Rahul helps Anu establish herself as a model. Rahul also manages to become a singer but begins to think that Anu helped her in becoming one. His ego proves to be his handicap and he starts resenting Anu. How finally Rahul realizes his folly and runs to get his love back forms the rest of the story.
Aashiqui has better plot development and characterizations compared to Aashiqui 2. The performances in Aashiqui 2 is a lot better than of the actors in the originals. Having said that, Aashiqui made household names out of Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal as effortlessly as Aashiqui 2 has made Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor popular. Musically speaking, Aashiqui reigns supreme as its songs are known to be matchless and timeless.
As Rahul Roy puts it, “As far as I can see, there is very little connection between my Aashiqui and this film except that shot of the lovers’ faces hidden in the coat. But the impact of that moment is so great that people immediately connected the two films. However, in my opinion nostalgia is impossible to beat. And like it or not, Aashiqui is in the region of nostalgia.”
Made on a low budget of just Rs. 12 crores, Aashiqui 2 has made more Rs. 39 crores at the end of the 7 day run, making a cool profit of Rs. 27 crores. It is still going strong for this week.
So strong has been the popularity of Aashiqui 2 that people have come back to watch the original. Like one user said, “The hangover of Aashiqui 2 just doesn’t seem to ebb. Heart-rending music, and an equally impactful movie.. dont know where to find solace.. watching the first version, to see if it helps. “ Meanwhile Aashiqui has its own share of fans.
Kiran M says, “ Saw aashiqui 2 just a couple of days back after watching this original aashiqui.. Believe me aashiqui 2 is sooooo boring.. Its not even a proper love story, it’s just about presumptions and ego.. The entire love story is only in one song, tum hi ho.. Rest of the movie I just couldn’t figure out wats going on.. No chemistry at all..Original aashiqui is a masterpiece, its songs are like awesome.”
So, which one is a better film, according to you Aashiqui 2 or Aashiqui 1 ?
